Issue of Presidents Licence


The government of Trinidad & Tobago have made it possible for visitors to marry here within four days of their arrival. If one or both partners are from Trinidad & Tobago then expect between four and eight days for the application process to be completed. It's easier than most imagine, and only a few documents are required for most applications. Read below to find out which application process is required for your circumstances.
A President's Licence is required when one of the parties to the marriage is a foreigner and wants to marry before the eight days required for the posting of marriage banns.
An application is made at the Registrar General's Department, Registration House and at the Registrar General’s Department, Tobago.
Both parties appear before a Marriage Clerk.

Documents Required:
   1. Valid ID of both parties
   2. Original Divorce absolute or Death Certificate of previous spouse and certified translation thereto, if applicable
   3. Letter explaining why such a License is required
Time-frame for delivery: Approximately 3 days
Cost/Fee: $100.00




The President's Authority facilitates the posting of marriage banns by a resident/national on behalf of a foreigner who is to marry in Trinidad and Tobago.
Provide information to Registrar General's Department, Registration House and Jerningham Street, Scarborough, Tobago.

Process:
   1. Put up Marriage Notice at Warden's Office nearest to which resident party lives. - $10.00
   2. Seven days later obtain a copy from Warden's Office - attend Marriage Clerk, Registrar General's Department for guidelines.
   3. Complete and sign Application Forms at Civil Registry. - $100.00
   4. Return approximately 3 days later for approved application.
   5. Take approval to Warden's Office and Marriage Licence will be issued. - $10.00

Documents Required:
   1. Valid ID of resident party
   2. Original Divorce absolute or Death Certificate of previous spouse and certified translation thereto, if applicable
   3. Copy of Marriage Notice from Warden's Office and
   4. Statutory Declaration from party residing abroad (precedent will be provided by Marriage Clerk) done by Notary Public

If both partners are visiting from abroad then you will be required to be on the Island for at least 3 full days (count 4 from you arrival date) before you can apply for the special wedding licence and the application can only be made on a week day. Once you have this license you are then able to marry. Some countries may require you to register the intention to marry in your home country before hand.

Documents Required.
1. You will require your passports which are acceptable as proof of identity, and proof of entry in the form of an airline ticket or printed e-ticket.
2.If either of you have been married before then original decree absolute or death certificates will be required where applicable.
3.Birth certificates are not required so leave those safely at home.
Time-frame for delivery: Approximately 1 - 6 weeks

Publication of Marriage Banns for the City of Port of Spain

Provide information at Registrar General's Department, Registration House or Warden's Office, Beacon Building.

Documents Required:
   1. Valid ID of parties
   2. Original Divorce absolute or Death Certificate of previous spouse and certified translation thereto, if applicable
Time-frame for delivery: 1 day
Cost/Fee: $10.00
Issue of Marriage Licence Certificates

Obtain from Marriage Clerk, Civil Registry - Registrar General's Department, Red House after banns are published
Time-frame for delivery: Seven days after publication excluding date Banns was posted.
Cost/Fee: $10.00
If you are under 18 years of age then a statutory declaration signed and stamped by a solicitor proving parental consent will be required

If you have changed your name then legal proof signed and stamped by a solicitor will be required

Wedding ceremonies can only be conducted between 6am and 6pm

Wedding ceremonies can only be conducted by a Trinidad & Tobago registered marriage officer

Wedding certificates may take up to two weeks to be prepared, allow up to 6 weeks if an apostille stamp is required

Issued Wedding certificates are Duplicates - the original certificate is kept at the registrar generals office.
